Edo Governor-Elect Okpebholo Alleges Looting by Outgoing Obaseki Administration, Calls on EFCC, DSS, Demands Investigations
The Edo State Governor-Elect, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has raised serious allegations against the outgoing administration of Governor Godwin Obaseki, accusing it of engaging in large-scale looting of public funds and assets.
In a statement released less than a month before the scheduled handover of power, Okpebholo condemned the actions of government officials, alleging that loans are being taken recklessly while public properties, including vehicles, furniture, and even food supplies, are being plundered.
“With great concern, we regret the numerous reports of looting of government funds and properties by officials of the outgoing administration from Government House, Benin City,” Okpebholo stated.
He expressed alarm at the continued borrowing by the outgoing administration, saying, “It is disturbing that with only weeks left to the handover, the Obaseki administration is still securing questionable loans from banks and financial institutions.”
The Governor-Elect further alleged that government officials are engaging in mass vandalism and theft of public property, citing examples of vehicles, furniture, household gadgets, and carpets being carted away from government offices and residences.
“This disgraceful conduct erodes the trust of Edo citizens in those tasked with serving them over the past eight years,” he added.
Okpebholo called on relevant law enforcement agencies, including the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the Police, and the Department of State Services (DSS), to thoroughly investigate these allegations. He also urged them to hold anyone involved accountable, while safeguarding public property from further vandalism.
Additionally, Okpebholo issued a warning to banks and financial institutions, advising them to halt further dealings with the outgoing government, particularly the issuance of loans during the transition period.
“The Accountant-General of Edo State must uphold integrity in his duties,” Okpebholo emphasized, adding that any institution or individual found guilty of misconduct will face severe consequences.
He assured that his administration would maintain close surveillance of the situation until the transition is complete. Okpebholo concluded by reiterating his commitment to transparency, stressing that his government will adopt a zero-tolerance policy towards corruption and unethical behavior.
“We will not tolerate impunity in any form,” the Governor-Elect warned, underscoring his determination to restore accountability and good governance.
