Studying abroad has always been our family tradition for generations


Afrobeats star, Davido has revealed that overseas education has long been a tradition in his family, tracing the practice back to his grandfather’s generation.

Speaking in a recent interview that has gained attention on social media, the award-winning singer explained that his grandfather ensured his children received education abroad, particularly in the United States.

According to Davido, his father attended university in Kentucky, describing international education as a culture that has been maintained within the family for decades.

“My grandfather was a senator, and most of his children were sent to America for their education. My dad went to university in Kentucky,” he said.

The singer noted that studying abroad is common among many affluent African families, adding that the trend has continued across generations.

Davido also shared details about his family’s multicultural background, revealing that his parents first met in London. He explained that his mother was from Edo State, while his father is Yoruba, with Igbo ancestry through his grandmother.

He further disclosed that his mother later travelled to the United States to pursue a master’s degree, strengthening the family’s long-standing connection with America.

Reflecting on his upbringing between Nigeria and the United States, Davido said the exposure played a significant role in shaping his worldview and contributed positively to both his personal development and international music career.

The singer credited the experience for helping him develop a global perspective that has influenced his success on the world stage.
