American rapper J. Cole has explained why he decided to retract his diss track aimed at Kendrick Lamar. In the track “7 Minute Drill,” Cole had responded to Lamar’s earlier jabs, notably saying Lamar “fell off like the Simpsons.” However, during his performance at the 2024 Dreamville Festival in North Carolina, J. Cole took a moment to apologize to Lamar.
He revealed that his recent single, “Port Antonio,” was inspired by those who sought to incite drama for attention and profit. Cole expressed that engaging in conflict would only create negative feelings between him and Lamar, which he wanted to avoid. This reflection shows his desire to maintain respect and camaraderie within the hip-hop community, despite the competitive nature of the industry.
He raps: “I pulled the plug because I saw where that was about to go, they wanted blood, they wanted clicks to make their pockets grow.
“They see the fire in my pen and think I’m dogging smoke. I wouldn’t have lost the battle, dog, I would’ve lost a bro, I would’ve gained a foe, and all for what?”
